Perry Service Learning
Perry Service Learning program is a senior elective that combines English and social studies curricula with
volunteer service to promote social involvement through education and service. Students will be volunteering
for an instructor approved social service agency, community organization, or government office position that
will enhance their classroom discussions and projects. Students will provide their own transportation when
volunteering. The volunteer placement expectations will involve students in significant tasks that will enhance
their ability to understand social and community issues. The classroom expectations will be supported by a
rigorous social issues curriculum and allow students to make connections between what they learn in class
and experience in the community. Social and community issues will come alive for students through their
experiences, classroom discussions and projects. Community partners include United Way, Project Hope,
Salvation Army, and Karpos. Perry Service Learning Webpage.
Unlocking the Code PD session at Swagelok
This professional development program introduces K-8 teachers to the foundational concepts of binary code
through a fun, hands-on activity. Participants will learn how binary code, the language of computers, uses 0s
and 1s to represent information. They'll translate letters and numbers into binary and then use colored beads to
create keychains and bracelets that visually represent these codes.
This workshop provides educators with a creative and engaging method to teach binary basics and
computational thinking, and even introduce coding concepts in an age-appropriate way across various subjects
like math, science, and language arts. Teachers will be equipped with a ready-to-use activity and the
knowledge to adapt it to different grade levels and learning objectives. (Date: March 12, 2025)
